Last Tuesday, 27 August 2024, the project team released two more lynxes into the wild in the Thuringian Forest. The young lynxes Vreni and Kilian are following in the footsteps of Frieda and Viorel, who were released into the wild in the region in May 2024.
Lynx Vreni from the Swiss Langenberg Zoo and Kilian from the Nuremberg Zoo grew up in near-natural enclosures. In April 2024, they came to the BUND wildcat-village in Hütscheroda to be prepared for their release into the wild. Both were very shy of humans right from the start. At the beginning of August, Vreni and Kilian were brought to the reintroduction enclosure in the Thuringian Forest.
State Secretary Dr Burkhard Vogel from the Thuringian Ministry of the Environment opened the doors to freedom for the two lynxes. This lays the foundation for a long-term stable lynx population in the Thuringian Forest. We wish Vreni and Kilian a good start to their free life in the Thuringian Forest!
