On November 27th, an information event for the project “Lynx Thuringia” took place at the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Thuringian Forest Information Center. The aim of the presentation, followed by a discussion, was to present the ongoing project’s results and the goals for the lynx population support in the Thuringian Forest from 2024 to invited representatives from municipalities and districts in the Thuringian Forest, nature conservation and hunting authorities, ThüringenForst, the State Hunting Association, and others. Starting next spring, up to 20 lynxes are planned to be released over the next few years (approximately 4 animals per year). This initiative is intended to establish a self-replicating lynx population that connects existing but isolated lynx populations in the Harz Mountains and Bavaria, which are threatened by inbreeding.
